NEISD technology team creates parent webinars for Seesaw, Google Classroom

It’s almost time to sign in to the new school year.

“Students today, they are not scared of the technology,” Christi Ramsey said.

Ramsey is the Director of Instructional Technology and has been with NEISD for 16 years.

While teachers are busy setting up their virtual classrooms, students are prepping at home with their Chromebooks, iPads, and WIFI.

There’s also a lot going on behind the scenes too.

“We really are looking at getting kids to be future-ready, and future-ready changes every day,” Ramsey explained.

She and her team are not only ensuring that teachers and students are prepared, but also parents by offering sixteen new webinars in both English and Spanish on NEISD’s virtual Learning Hub.

“It’s for parents to get an idea of navigation and get used to what’s there. They don’t know how to get in and navigate, when is something due, how do I see an assignment, how do I communicate with the teacher,” Ramsey added.

The webinars will be streamed live on Zoom and YouTube.

They will give parents an overview of Seesaw and Google Classroom which are the two platforms kids will be using to submit assignments and share classwork.

“With the webinars, really it is about the feedback that we received from parents. They needed some guidance and some help and we took some of that and we arranged it in a way that was more understandable,” she explained.

Parents can plan to join in on August 12th, 13th, 18th, or 19th and parents can choose a session that is most convenient.

Time slots are available in the morning, afternoon and evening hours.

The Zoom sessions will be available to the first 500 people who register.

Any additional people can head over to YouTube and watch the livestream there with a link that will be provided.

Ramsey hopes this will help alleviate some of the stress for parents who may not be so tech-savvy.

She also credits her team for doing the heavy lifting.

“I have an amazing team; I have a department of 25. They are go-getters, the parent webinars-really this was their idea.”

As technology becomes part of the everyday classroom, teachers continue to innovate their instruction and students will ultimately have the advantage.

“Allowing students to have these experiences while they are in school really does produce future-ready skills for students. We want them to be prepared when they get out in the job market or in college. We want kids to be well-rounded; we care about their futures,” Ramsey said.
