Golden Webinars – Jocelyn Bell Burnell – "The Discovery of Pulsars – A Graduate Student's Story"

The ‘Golden Webinars in Astrophysics’ series seeks to bring forefront research in astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology to the public in the English and Spanish language. Our speaker of the Golden Webinar on July 29th, 2020 was Jocelyn Bell Burnell, who is visiting professor of astrophysics at the University of Oxford.

Professor Bell Burnell is a Visiting Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Oxford. She was part of the team who constructed the Interplanetary Scintillation Array during her Phd, which would be used to study quasars, which had only recently been discovered. As part of her work, she noticed a signal that was pulsing regularly every 1.3 seconds and which tracked across the sky with the stars. Initially named LGM (Little Green Men), these objects were soon renamed pulsating radio sources, which was later shortened to pulsar. Her supervisor, Antony Hewish, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1974 for this discovery alongside Martin Ryle.

The panel of the July 29th, 2020 ‘Golden Webinar’ consisted of:
