Golden Webinars – Didier P. Queloz – "Exoplanets, Earth Twins, Pathways for the Origins of Life"

The ‘Golden Webinars in Astrophysics’ series seeks to bring forefront research in astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology to the public. Our fifth speaker during the Golden Week of Webinars (8-12 June 2020) was Didier Queloz, who is professor of physics at the Cavendish Laboratory of Cambridge University, and professor of physics at the University of Geneva.

Dr. Queloz not only works in the field of exoplanets, but he kick-started this field when, in 1995 during his PhD, he and his supervisor, Michel Mayor, announced the first discovery of a giant planet orbiting another star. Over the next 25 years, his work has focused on improving the detection and measurement capabilities of exoplanet systems with the goal to retrieve information on their physical structure in order to better understand their formation and evolution by comparison with our Solar System. More recently, he is directing his activity to the detection of Earth like planets and universal life. In 2019, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his ground-breaking discovery.

The panel of the June 12th, 2020 ‘Golden Webinar’ consisted of:
